Sunny Sunday, Gloomy Monday

Our drive on Sunday was just as dramatic as it was on Saturday with crazy high cliffs as we made our way around the fjords.  This is a remote region made up of small villages and sheep farms.  Every time there were sheep on the hills (or not) Stephane would say “look sheep” followed shortly by “nope, rocks”.   Mind you, there were a lot of sheep, some defying gravity on the hills and some defying Stephane’s telepathy.  When ever he saw sheep close to the road, he would will them not to cross over.  “Don’t even think about it” he would whisper and many simply waited until we passed or turned around and high tailed it back to the ditch.  There were a few who just sauntered across daring us to give them a toot.  There was no need as they managed to get across before we got into bumping range.

We did see a lovely waterfall near the Arnarfjordur fjord.  We pulled over to take pictures as we weren’t sure when we would see another waterfall.

Just a short distance from these falls we came across the mother of all falls, at least in this region called Dynjandi.  This place came complete with a full size paved parking lot, hiking trails, places to pitch a tent and flush toilets.  Toilets are a rare thing to find at the rest stops.  Most rest stops/look out points consisted of a flattened out gravel area off the main road.  The fancy ones had picnic tables and information billboards but no toilets, not even portables.

But of course the best part of this site were the water falls, a great big one that fed into smaller ones that eventually went out to sea.  These are the smaller falls.

It didn’t take us long to get to the town where we would be spending the nighty.  It was a pretty town so we went for a walk to see what type of shops they had.  It was Sunday evening so everything was closed but since all the signs indicated they would be open on Monday at 9am, we decided to stay in town until then to check them out.  Stef saw some nice hats in one window and I saw a nice gift shop.  It seems that their 9am opening time was just a suggestion as nothing was open and some simply said they would be back on Monday, not indicating which Monday.

We left disappointed.  Monday continued to be a day of disappointments as the drive around the next fjords were not as exciting as the previous day’s.  This time the road hugged the shore line.  It was raining and very windy but we still managed to have a few highlights along the way.  Stef spotted some seals, resting on tufts of grass near the shore.  I asked him where – where else than the spot with all the cars.  Tourists like us, taking pictures, so we joined them.  Stef said one seal was waiving at him but I suspect it’s flipper was just flapping around at it tried to turn over.  It reminded me of Finnigan, when he flops over on his back for belly rubs.  We watched them for a while and then moved on.

imageEven on this dull, overcast day, the colours around us were lovely.  The grass had colours of lavender and green and the hills looked like a wool blanket.

After hours of driving we finally made it to our sleeping destination, a big guest house attached to a farm where they breed horses.  Here’s hoping we get some nice photos of them tomorrow.
